We neither control the language, nor the usage of English. And we’re English! Podcast has come to be a catch-all for online media, but you’re not going to get “the Kids” to call it anything else any time soon. We’re stuck with the word podcast, for the foreseeable future – we just have to learn to live with it.

KerryJ, you might also want to say that most people who create websites are also called “designers” or “programmers”.

I disagree that a New Media Producer is a person who creates web sites. Web sites are hardly “new media” – and how people will use podcasts in the future may be very different to how they use them now.

In the very near future, people may want more information to be embedded in their podcast feeds than the ID3 tags that now exist. They may want animations, videos, documents, etc to be an optional part of the podcast stream.

Therefore, I also research and trial other types of media so that I can provide a richer experience for those subscribers who may demand it in future. I’m more than a podcaster or a New Media Producer – I’m a Communicator.

I’m a podcaster! New media producer is a person who creates websites. I don’t do that. I’m a filmmaker that uses RSS to deliver downloadable media to the pc, ipod and other devices – Podcasts.

With Apple, Inc and Microsoft supporting “podcasting”, along with 100,000 plus podcasters with audiences…

Like, I said…I’m a podcaster!

Hi Don, thanks for this. I’m a fan of yours, as well as being a New Media Producer myself.
This post resonated, as I was just a guest on an internet tv show, When the host asked what I do, I said, I’m a New Media Producer. When she asked “What’s that?”, I said that I produce audio and video programs that you can listen to and watch in iTunes if you search under…etc.

It’s still klunky, but I’ve been paying attention to the points where people’s eyes light up in understanding: video programs, iTunes (that gets a big nod)…somewhere in all these words is a quick way to explain, and your post brought me closer to it…

You say CPM is outmoded, but what is a better model? Every other model that has been pitched to me as a podcaster over the years has been a spectacular deal for the advertiser, but has only netted me double digit numbers.

On the other hand, when I’ve been given straight CPM deals, my income has been comparable to a full time job.

If you can beat that deal with some revolutionary new model for advertising, I would encourage you to elaborate.
