UK Podcasters Establish Legal Music Podcasting

Saturday March 29th 2008 at the Guardian newspaper, London, UK, in a seminar entitled Podcasting, Rights and Music the UK Podcasters Association hosted a seminar highlighting both the impact of legislation upon podcasters and media producers, and also outlining an established legal framework for fully licensed music podcasting.

Becky Hogge from the Open Rights Group lead a meaningful session on how TV regulation threatens to spill over to internet. Dean Whitbread from UKPA moderated a panel on music rights in which speakers from the MCPS-PRS (the UK performing rights organisation representing writers and publishers) and the head of digital for the Association of Independent Music laid out the now more affordable and less rigid schemes designed to give podcasters access to their extensive repertoire of music.

2008 NAB Show

As part of it’s commitment to content on all platforms through a new effort called Content Central, the 2008 NAB Show is devoting an afternoon of panels examining original online content (April 16 at the Las Vegas Convention Center, full conference April 14-17). The sessions will  focus on companies and content creators that are mining the new possibilities created by the Internet, rather than using the Web as a delivery mechanism for existing programming.

Participants include Turner Sports Online, which provides its viewers with a unique online experience that parallels the broadcast content; My Damn Channel, whose Hollywood insider artists could have gone the traditional online broadcast route (with managers, agents, testing, etc.), but chose to connect with their audience directly and retain full creative control; and JibJab.com; AskANinja.com and Animax, successful online entertainment companies working outside the system.

Attached and below is the full list of Wednesday’s new media sessions, with the “disruptive” content filling the afternoon.

New Media Events

I just recently had a conversation with a Podcaster who was not aware that there are conferences, podcamps and meetups for podcasters to share knowledge and learn from each other. The biggest, but not the only, event may arguably be the New Media Expo coming this August in Las Vegas. In case you’re not aware of the New Media Expo or of the many others events occurring this year, I’ve listed them to the best of my ability below.

Wait, there is more! I recommend doing a Google search and checking out meetup.com to see if there are regional podcaster meetups in your area.

ADM Members Also Attending NAB

Susan Bratton mentioned in yesterday’s post that ADM will have a strong presence at ad:tech this April in San Francisco. During the same time, the long-established National Association of Broadcasters conference is being held in Las Vegas.

ADM members will also be prominent at NAB, including Richard Burns of Culture Catch.

These conferences are great opportunities to meet other ADM members and for us members to reach out to podcasters and to the community at large. As a member of the Education and Outreach Committee, I can tell you we have several targets we want to reach. We’ll be more successful if we can have some people on the ground in as many venues as possible!

Mac Podcaster Meet-up

Today I heard one of the most engaging, lively, and poignant discussions on the state of the podcasting industry. I’m a regular listener of Adam Christianson’s The MacCast, where he dispenses a healthy dose of Mac news and tips twice weekly. However, a recent episode featured the audio from the Mac Podcaster Meet-up 2008 held at this year’s MacWorld Expo. The panel featured top tech podcasters such as Scott Bourne (Apple Phone Show), Leo Laporte (MacBreak Weekly), Dave Hamilton (Mac Geek Gab), Ken Ray (Mac OS Ken), Cali Lewis (Geek Brief TV), and Victor Cajiao (Typical Mac User).

The discussion touched upon the perceived leveling off of podcast growth (perhaps just in tech), growth areas for other podcast categories, and the need for an association like the ADM to bring some order to podcasting when it comes to metrics and reporting.

It’s a long episode but worth every minute, so I encourage you to take a listen. And kudos to Adam and Victor to bringing this to us. It’s important that we all take notice of the impending business need for podcasting to play in the sandbox with other media and not get sand kicked in our faces.
