Advertising Standards Committee Chair Nominations

ADM Advertising Standards Committee Chair Nominee
David Herscott
President, MEA Digital

An Internet Marketing veteran, David developed some of the earliest commercial websites for companies such as: AT&T, Delta Airlines, Coors Brewing Co., and MasterCard while at Modem Media in the mid 1990s. In addition, David has held senior-level marketing positions with BBDO, MP3.com, CDNow.com, and Pointcast. When not working with clients, David is a published author (Marketing Mojo), Columnist (ADOTAS), speaker (ad:tech, Jupiter, DMA) and an advisor to Wall Street on Internet Marketing trends and technology. He holds an MBA from Boston University.

ADM Advertising Standards Committee Chair Nominee
Brian McMahon
CEO, National Podcasting System

I was in advertising for more than 26 years. I started out in Silicon Valley, working for local high-tech agencies. I did rather well, won many local and regional awards, and was soon recruited by the international agency, Ogilvy & Mather. O&M wanted me because they had just landed the Microsoft account and none of their "travel and soap" creatives understood it or wanted to work on it either. I spent many years at O&M and eventually became a Creative Director, where I was hustled into a small room and given the secret of the Ogilvy Way. I left O&M when they insisted I move to New York and work on IBM, nothing against IBM. Since leaving, I have been a one-man-Ogilvy in business on my own. For five years, I was the writer, AE, artist, sales person, layout expert, media guy for close to 100 Silicon Valley companies who couldn't afford the larger Ogilvy, even though they knew they needed it. Over a quarter century, I won more than 100 local and national Addys and Clios.

Then, at the end of 2005, I saw the writing on the wall for my brand of advertising and decided to try an create something new. I had been listening to the Battlestar Galactica, Photoshop and Macworld podcasts for about a year, when I hit on the idea, not of getting sponsors, but giving sponsors their own voice in commercial podcasting, or commercial video podcasting, just to be clear. The National Podcasting System followed in May of 2006. I am the CEO.

I am running for chairman of the Advertising Standards Board. I believe my two-point-five decades in the business have prepared me to assist the ADM in setting a variety of standards that would serve podcasters and advertising agency media planners alike.

Platform:  Following the election, I would meet with my board to arrange for a list of potential advertising metrics and translations.  These would be presented to the main ADM for approval and comment.  These would be presented to a number of agencies for their comment as well.  Then the board and committee members would each be tasked with a number of the approved points with the direction to set an appropriate standard and be able to support it and defend it. In cases where there is no common ground, a formula would be created to approximate the missing data.  For example, agencies live on CPM (cost per thousand) to take into account all of the waste in media advertising, well there is no waste in podcasting, so we'll need away to translate our numbers into a usable measure.

ADM Advertising Standards Committee Chair Nominee
Nate Pagel
CEO, Podaddies

Nate Pagel has worked as video producer and director, a recording engineer and record company co-founder, creative director on the agency side and technologist working with early video codecs as far back as 1993.

He’s currently CEO and co-founder at Podaddies, a next generation ad network focused on solutions that monetize online video, UGC, P2P, and podcasts.

He's also a serial entrepreneur with extensive knowledge of the video space, from broadcast production to rich media online interactivity, IP networking, media in the home, advertising and creative design. His products and productions have garnered over 60 industry awards from Best of Show at CES and Best Digital Effects at Invision to Forbes’ Best of the Web. His video productions and art installations have been shown at festivals, events and museums in 16 countries.  He currently leads a focused team in the development of compelling publishing and distribution tools that enable broadcasters, publishers and websites to easily monetize their online video content.

“Pagel is probably in contention for longest digital video resume ever, on the technical side starting with designing interactive CD-ROMs in 1993, and on the artistic side with a long career in media art and installations.” - Liz Gannes, NewTeeVee, Dec 2006.

His interest is coming up with standards – that work for every facet of this nascent media industry - so that ad agencies find it easier to buy appropriate ad space with downloadable media.

Education & Outreach Committee Chair Nominations

ADM Education & Outreach  Committee Chair Nominee
Steven G. Bustin
EVP Business Development and Sales, Podaddies

Platform:  I have been involved in internet advertising and marketing since 1995 when I was a co-founder of online ad rep agency Cybereps (sold to Interep).  I founded online marketing agency Online Media Partners and sold that company to a client.  My path continued with emerging media companies: iBeam Broadcasting (Director of Media Services, early satellite based broadband distributor), Ten Square (SVP Media Services, early out-of-home internet-based media company), Fathom Online (Sales, early paid search agency), iCrossing (Managing Director, early organic search agency) and Podaddies (In-stream video ad network and technology company). I have strong leadership, organizational and strategic skills and experience.

As Chair of the Outreach and Education Committee I would utilize my organization and leadership skills to openly engage all members to bring forth ideas on how best to position the organization to the advertising, marketing and consumer communities and to execute on an educational program.  Education and the sharing of ideas and experience benefits both marketers and consumers, especially important for a new trade organization in a nascent but vibrantly growing industry like ours.  As a 20 year part time instructor (UC Berkeley, St Mary’s, Golden Gate) I understand how to communicate new ideas and concepts to an often times skeptical audience.  One idea may be to do Downloadable Media 101 Seminars for both business and consumer organizations to foster understanding and acceptance.  Another may be to publish monthly case studies by our members.  In any event, it is all about internal and external education regarding this incredible emerging media wave we all enjoy surfing.

ADM Education & Outreach  Committee Chair Nominee
Ben Heskett
Vice President of Marketing, Kiptronic, Inc.

Biography

Ben is the architect of Kiptronic’s marketing programs. He was one of the founding members of the News.com team at CNET Networks, serving in various capacities including department editor. In addition, Ben established his own marketing and communications practice and served as a senior executive at PerkettPR, Inc., a technology-focused communications firm.

He has won journalism awards at several stops in his career and has numerous radio and television appearances to his credit. He also serves on the Board of Directors for Hands On Bay Area, a volunteer organization. Ben holds a B.A. from the University of Massachusetts and attended the Poynter Institute for Media Studies.

Platform Statement

Emerging markets require a succinct set of outreach strategies and educational venus in order for the appropriate messages to be disseminated to your target audience. This requirement is particularly important in the realm of downloadable media, a medium that means different things to different constituencies. As Chair or member of the Outreach and Education Committee, I would bring a developed sense of how to differentiate the Association for Downloadable Media and further its goals. Having joined Kiptronic in 2005, I have an in–depth perspective on the evolution of podcasting and its unique attributes as a downloadable medium for video and audio files. I would hope the work of the Outreach and Education Committee would result in a sharing of ideas and best practices in order to arrive at a consensus on how to drive the key ADM messages forward.

ADM Education & Outreach  Committee Chair Nominee
Rob Walch
Vice President Podcast Relations, Wizzard Media

I am interested in the Education and Outreach Chair because this community is one that for the past three years I have dedicated my life to.  I have spoken publicly about and evangelized podcasting in over 50 different events around the country.  I have spoken to college journalism classes, to a US Film Festival, to the Newspaper Association of America, to a high school conference on tech education, and many other groups and conferences you would not associate with new media. One thing I have always looked for in speaking engagements is an audience that knows nothing about podcasting.

The biggest issues facing our community are not issues about the name, or how to get people to subscribe to podcasts.  But rather it is in educating people about why they would want to subscribe to and also create podcasts.  I would work to help us concentrate on getting the word out about the great content that is available. I would also work on letting people know how easy and inexpensive it is to create their own content.

On the personal side I started this with podcast411 in late 2004, which has been a resource many have used to get started and many others to learn from my guests on how to improve their shows. I think I would be a great fit for this position because it is something I have been doing for the past three years full time. It is a community I have a total commitment to. I believe in the mission of the ADM and think it is uniquely positioned to help the community. I look forward to working with the ADM in some capacity regardless of the outcome of the election.

Measurement Committee Chair Nominations

ADM Measurement Committee Chair Nominee
Jonathon Barbato
Partner, Apricot Corporation

Advertisers demand credible and relevant measures of their ads’ performance and the performance of the media they advertise within. My goal by Chairing the ADM Committee on Measurement is to make the association a bridge between what advertisers and their agencies want and what content owners are able to supply.

As Chair, I will have the following areas of focus:

  • Recruit a committee of ADM members eager and invested in the success of measurement criteria
  • Involve key advertisers and their agencies to formulate standards
  • Work with measurement solution companies to communicate the needs and translate the available technology into viable product recommendations
  • Assure that the interests of ADM members are always served and that the results of all committee efforts are effectively communicated back outward into the Industry

My experience is well-suited to accomplish this task in that I have easy access to advertisers and agencies (as founder of RipeTV, the first multi-platform ad-supported independent entertainment network); I have a first-hand understanding of measurement technologies (as a consultant for Rentrak and their multi-platform initiative); my roots are in monetizing various platforms of digital entertainment (as the operating partner in Apricot-see http://www.apricotcorp.com) ; and I am serving or have served on scores of association committees and panels (including: IAB video & measurement panels; CTAM VOD Committees; Promax International Marketing Committee and NATPE panels on TV syndication).

I am currently monetizing digital content on the cable, broadband, mobile and podcast platforms and have over 20 years of entertainment distribution experience including: Founder of Ripe Digital Entertainment; Head of Marketing for Starz On Demand; Head of Marketing, MGM TV; VP of Domestic & International TV Syndication – Sony, Genesis and Warner Bros. and others.

ADM Measurement Committee Chair Nominee

I have strong leadership, organizational and strategic skills and experience.

As Chair of the Measure Committee I would utilize my organization and leadership skills to openly engage all members to bring forth ideas on how best to position the organization to the advertising, marketing and consumer communities and to execute on a metric standards program.  Metrics and data are especially critical to an emerging media channel.  One idea may be to do Downloadable Media 101 Seminars for both business and consumer organizations to foster understanding and acceptance.  Another may be to work with industry leaders like the IAB, Netratings, Comscore, etc to establish standards.  In any event, it is all about internal and external education regarding this incredible emerging media wave we all enjoy surfing.

ADM Measurement Committee Chair Nominee
Steve Eley
Escape Pod

I'm interested in the Measurement committee chair because, more than any other role in the ADM, I view it as a business *and technical* challenge.  This committee will be responsible for determining advertisers' needs and translating them into specifications for software development.  As a former management consultant and software engineer, that's what I've been doing for a decade: learning to speak both "business" and "programmer," and turning requirements into design.  I believe I'm well situated to represent both cultures; I'm a strong communicator, a fierce nitpicker for technical accuracy, and an experienced cat-herder.

I have another motivation as well:  as an independent podcaster, self-hosted and unaffiliated with any network, I want to ensure that the technical specifications this committee develops are flexible enough to be implemented in any reasonable environment, without dependence on any single company or service.  The service providers in podcasting today are vital, and I strongly feel they should be active in the Measurement committee.  But the chairman's role should be an agnostic one.  I have no relationship or bias for or against any company or technology.  If I am elected, I will work very hard to ensure that podcasters from all fields and affiliations can comply with the ADM's measurement standards *without* sacrificing their freedom of choice in hosting or delivery.

Thanks, and regardless of your choice, I am excited about the work the ADM is doing and look forward to contributing value however I can.

ADM Measurement Committee Chair Nominee
John Federico
Senior Strategist, IconNicholson

This nomination is offered by John Havens, Blog Spot Radio.

I would like to nominate ADM member John Federico for the Chair of the Measurement Committee.  Although is currently a Senior Strategist at IconNicholson, I first met him in his role as Senior Director, Podcasting at Audible, Inc. John's experience as a interactive marketer has focused on developing new media businesses for companies like Advance Internet, NJ.com, NetCreations (now ReturnPath), MarketSource (now Youth360), and MaMaMedia.  I also know him as the affable and oh-so-knowledgeable host John host of the On Digital Media podcast about the technology, creation, distribution, consumption and monetization of digital media and its effects on traditional media and marketing.

In terms of being the Chair, John has been involved in setting and evolving standards in interactive media measurement since 1994. Some examples include his participation in the development of the ad serving and content management systems at MarketSource Corporation, the development of the statistics and reporting engine at Advance Publications Internet and more recently, his work in podcasting having developed the only podcast delivery platform determined "Audit Ready" by a credible third-party media auditor. Additionally, John has been enthusiastically advocating for an association to set measurement standards for nearly two years.

Finally, having known John for over a year, I can personally vouch for his passion for the podcasting industry at large and his voracious desire to both learn and teach on subjects involving new media.  I also sincerely appreciate his supporting PodCamp NYC last year as a sponsor, further proving his desire to support the podcasting community.  We’ll be lucky to get him as Chair and I hope we do.

ADM Measurement Committee Chair Nominee
Risto Koski
Business Manager, Multimedia/ Nokia Music and Podcasting services, Nokia

Risto Koski is heading Podcasting business development in Nokia. Risto has extensive knowledge of mobile service and application business as he has worked in mobile market business roles over a decade. Nokia is the world’s largest mobile handset manufacturer with almost 40% global market share in mobile phones and over 50% global market share in smartphone markets. As the number of mobile handsets has long ago bypassed the number of pc/ mac the mobile handset market provides the next generation platform for downloadable content and targeted advertising - beyond traditional online world. All players in the value chain of downloadable media targeting global markets should include mobility as a strong component in their business plans.

ADM Measurement Committee Chair Nominee
Angelo Mandato
Chief Information Officer, Raw Voice

Please accept the following nomination for Angelo Anthony Mandato for a position on the Measurement committee.

Angelo is a seasoned web developer, programmer and network administrator with exceptional knowledge of network software and web development. Since joining RawVoice in August of 2005, Angelo has worked on new media measurement applications that are currently being used for monetizing advertising revenue. His excellent analytical skills help him resolve issues arising in the new media space.

Angelo has a B.S. in Computer Science from Kent State University, where he focused his studies in Web Programming and Internet Engineering. After graduation, he was a Programmer Analyst at the United McGill Corporation in Columbus, Ohio, and contributed to several open source projects while developing applications at home. During his seven years at United McGill, he utilized his strengths in web design and Internet Engineering by authoring many company web and Windows applications, including a custom web server for caching large documents across the company's nationwide network, a web based purchasing system, a salaried time sheet system with reporting, and a web based E-mail administration system. Since United McGill, Angelo has worked for RawVoice as the Chief Information Officer and is the lead developer for all of the company's web and software applications. As a board member of RawVoice for over 2 years, he knows how to manage many tasks and work with others to achieve common goals.

His expertise of the new media space, knowledge of Internet Engineering, analytical and problem solving skills, and collaboration experience as a RawVoice board member makes Angelo an ideal candidate for the Measurement committee.

Membership Committee Chair Nominations

ADM Membership Committee Chair Nominee
John Havens
Vice President, Business Development, BlogTalkRadio

Here’s why I’m running for Chair if the ADM Membership Committee:

  • I've been talking about membership benefits a lot over the past few months and have been focusing on these at our last two meetings.
  • I have a passion for it.
  • There are two other highly qualified people running for O&E Chair, and I want to see ADM move forward successfully with committed people in all the roles we've laid out at this point.

Time wise, I believe the O&E Chair will be tasked with a lot of the heavy lifting for ADM right out of the box.  As I'm currently writing a book, Lead Organizer for PodCamp NYC, have a full time job and two young kids, I don't feel I'd be able to give that position the time it really needs for ADM once we codify positions in the next few months.

That said, I will work to ensure that Membership Benefits that currently exist are clearly laid out to help secure more members right away.  I'll also work to create a "why join ADM" packet/video/whatever comprised of testimonials from current members we can put up on YouTube, etc.  I'll also work to get up a list-serv and whatever tools will immediately bring all members benefits while working with my committee to assign near and long term goals for benefits that will grow as quickly as possible.

I'd also like to help coordinate major events/conferences for ADM moving forward.  I don't know if this would fall under the Membership Benefits purview (versus O&E), but if so, having run PodCampNYC and lots of other big events in NYC I feel I'd be qualified for that role if ADM feels a conference in the next year or so makes sense.

ADM Membership Committee Chair Nominee
Bryan Moffett
Sponsorship Operations Manager, NPR Digital Media

Bryan Moffett is Sponsorship Operations Manager for National Public Radio in Washington. I currently manage the team responsible for monetizing NPR's digital assets, including 10+ million monthly podcast downloads. I joined NPR in 2005 as a marketing analyst, and was part of the core team that developed NPR's podcasting strategy, product and sponsorship model.

NPR's podcasting partnership includes podcasts from NPR's award-winning programs, as well as a network of more than 150 podcasts from 35 other providers. Acura was the launch sponsor of NPR's podcast efforts in August 2005, and since then, NPR has served more than 100 million sponsorship credits for dozens of national sponsors.

Over the past year, I have worked within the industry and with agencies to refine the metrics for measuring podcast downloads. As Membership Committee chairman, I would work with committee members and the ADM membership to develop a suite of member benefits and tools, establish a clear membership structure and fee tier, and ensure the basic systems of membership management are in place so that ADM can hit the ground running.

Prior to NPR, I worked in the association industry - for the Radio-Television News Directors Association, as editorial/IT director, and staff member for many RTNDA/NAB conferences. I also spent several years as CTO of an association management firm, and helped dozens of associations manage their business, membership and trade shows. I have extensive experience with member management tools and the mechanics of managing a member-based organization.

  • Downloadable media can clearly benefit from some standardization of terminology, and I hope to involve all the parties in the downloadable media ecosystem, including: podcasters, advertising networks, other content providers and platforms, and technology or service providers, and others.

I have identified several benefits of standardized terminology for all of these parties, such as:

  • Monetization
  • Advertising
  • Industry Credibility
  • Interoperability
  • Media Coverage/PR

In a terminology standardization committee chair, the ADM needs someone who, in addition to having a technical and computer science background, has experience in the area of standards and using language to capture them. I hope to bring to bear my legal education and experience in this effort.

Furthermore, as a repeat entrepreneur who has co–founded two companies, I plan to bring an entrepreneurial frame of mind to the process, while balancing it with the background of someone who has been a board member.

ADM Terminology Standardization Committee Chair Nominee
David Rowley
Vice President of Engineering, Kiptronic, Inc.

I have over 23 years of experience in the software industry, holding executive and senior management positions with companies building downloadable media services, digital music licensing and commerce platforms, internet infrastructure, enterprise software for financial services, and scientific computing systems. I have a B.S. degree in Information and Computer Science from the University of California, Irvine.

As chair of the terminology standardization committee, I would leverage my experience in the areas of methodological formalisms and standards development to create a comprehensive inventory of concepts, entities and attributes germane to our industry, establish a framework for expressing their relationships, and deliver a taxonomy that guides content developers, advertisers, and solution providers. I expect this to be a highly collaborative effort, and look forward to the active participation of committee members whose expertise and interest spans this diverse field.
